Avondale Financial Literacy Workshops

Financial Literacy Workshop facilitated by First Financial Bank

Financial Literacy Workshop facilitated by First Financial Bank

Residents who have a full understanding of their finances – from managing debt and proper budgeting to retirement planning and foreclosure prevention – are more likely to thrive in an emerging Avondale. And yet, some to 40% of our 12,000 residents are unbanked, and there is no local bank or branch in all of Avondale.

ADC’s financial literacy efforts help ensure that residents who want to stay in the neighborhood are better able to. Our program aims to increase financial understanding among existing and potential homeowners by focusing on savings, budgeting, expense management and credit score improvement, and taking away the fear and embarrassment common among residents for whom the financial world is at best intimidating and at worst frightening.

Avondale Property Enhancement Program (APEP)

The Avondale Property Enhancement Program (APEP) is designed to improve community sustainability by addressing residential properties that are in disrepair.

The APEP exists to provide financial assistance to residential homeowners to make essential repairs when they lack sufficient resources, giving priority to those properties identified through the City of Cincinnati’s Neighborhood Enhancement Program (NEP).

Avondale Economic Mobility Fund

EMF ensures that existing Avondale residents have access to shelter. Avondale residents are at-risk of displacement due to the pandemic, and as increased development and investment in the area has driven tax and property values upwards. The EMF is an effort to prevent eviction and displacement of at-risk Avondale families.

Avondale Day & Feet in the Street 5K

ADC occasionally hosts community events to bring our neighborhood together. A great example was the Avondale Day featuring the Feet in the Street 5K and Avondale Festival & Health Fair. As we all know, in Cincinnati, African Americans live an average of 10 years less due to conditions that are largely treatable if diagnosed early.

Avondale Day is designed to offer a lifeline to at-risk African American males by providing health screenings, counsel and important information – all in the context of a day-long festival where friends and family were offered support and encouragement. In 2019 we hosted over 600 participants receiving health screenings, and 120 competitive 5K participants.

Avondale Communications

ADC also has a very robust communications platform to keep residents informed about important issues in Avondale. We have a biweekly email newsletter, website, Facebook page, Twitter feed and Instagram account. And we have a community engagement team that meets residents where they live and where they gather to deliver information and gain feedback about challenges facing our neighborhood.
