UC Health has been a funder of the Avondale Development Corporation since ADC was founded in 2011.
In keeping with its mission to improve the health of all people regardless of race, ethnicity or geography – and in line with its values of respect, integrity, inclusion and empathy – UC Health has played a leading role in helping to address issues of health disparities in Avondale.
UC Health’s partnership with ADC has revolved around neighborhood health disparities. They are particularly focused on addressing the “tale of two cities” that exists in Avondale: a neighborhood with significant civic assets and yet deeply entrenched challenges to the well-being of its residents.
UC Health has helped fund ADC’s Avondale Day, a day-long series of activities centered on health and community building. Events include the Avondale Festival & Health Fair, Black Men’s Health Forum and the 5K Avondale Feet in the Street walk and run. Avondale Day is a lifeline to at-risk African American families, providing health screenings, counsel and important information in the context of a day-long festival for friends and family. In addition to funds, UC Health also provides doctors, nurse practitioners, nurses and medical and administrative personnel. Where warranted, UC Health professionals provide referrals for follow-up evaluation and treatment. UC Health also supports ADC’s black men health awareness efforts by funding a forum to address socioeconomic conditions, mental health, trauma, stress and poverty.
UC Health has also provided funding for ADC’s strategic planning process and for organization capacity building, including communications.
