From the Desk of Russell Hairston…
As Executive Director of the Avondale Development Corporation (ADC), it is a pleasure to reflect on the recent highlights that showcase our community’s vibrancy, creativity, and growth. From the success of the Avondale Day Festival & Feet in the Street 5K to the inspiring Avondale Film Festival, and the exciting opportunities presented by our Vacant Land Parcels RFP, Avondale is moving forward in meaningful and transformative ways.
Feet in the Street 5K & Avondale Day Festival - Celebrating Our Community
Despite inclement weather causing us to reschedule from September 28th to October 6th, the 2024 Avondale Day Festival and Feet in the Street 5K remained Avondale’s largest annual collaboration. Over 250 attendees joined us for a day of festivities, with 60 participants taking part in the Feet in the Street 5K, including 15 competitive runners. We were especially proud of the 37 volunteers, 23 of whom were youth volunteers, who helped make this event a success.
Through this event, we supported four Avondale-based minority- and women-owned businesses: Gelato City, Chef Mike’s Burning with Style, Jefferson Enterprises, and The Parlor. None of this would have been possible without the collaborative efforts of Avondale organizations, community partners, and local businesses.
Avondale Film Festival: A Platform for Local Talent and Storytelling
On September 24th, ADC proudly hosted the 2024 Avondale Film Festival, celebrating the artistic talent within our community. The festival spotlighted diverse voices, particularly from Avondale and across Cincinnati. Our artist showcase featured painter Chris Dye, poet/painter Jue Amman, and fashion designer Katherine Coleman, each bringing their unique artistry to the forefront.
The festival also honored exceptional filmmakers in several categories, including:
Short Narrative: The Suicide Suspect by Brittin Williams
Short Documentary: Interception: Jayne Kennedy – American Sportscaster by Safiya Songhai
Student Short Narrative: The World Beyond by Justice W. Skinner
Student Short Documentary: Your Love Will Be Our Light by Braedon Ryle
We were inspired by feedback from local leaders, including Cincinnati Councilmember Scotty Johnson, Vice Mayor Jan-Michele Kearney, and Notre Dame’s own KK Bransford, who all highlighted the importance of supporting Avondale’s creative community and its potential as a hub for Cincinnati filmmaking.
Vacant Land Parcels RFP: Shaping the Future of Avondale
Looking ahead, we are excited about the opportunities presented by our Vacant Land Parcels Request for Proposals (RFP). This initiative invites qualified developers, co-developers, and organizations to submit proposals for the development of 17 vacant land parcels in Avondale. These proposals will help shape the future of our community, fostering growth and revitalization.
Proposals will be accepted through Monday, March 30, 2025, and can be submitted electronically or via hard copy. The purpose of this RFP is to solicit innovative and sustainable development ideas that align with Avondale’s long-term vision. We are eager to partner with those who are committed to making a positive impact on our neighborhood.
As we continue to drive progress in Avondale, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to all of our partners, sponsors, and community members. Your support is integral to our shared success, and I look forward to the exciting opportunities that lie ahead.
Together, we are building a brighter future for Avondale!
